Congratulations to Nastia Liukin

Beijing OlympicsNastia Liukin won a gold medal, three silvers, and a bronze at the Beijing Olympics and will soon be headed home. Fans can greet her at DFW, terminal B, gate 35 around 4 p.m. on August 21. Nastia is supposed to arrive around 4:15 p.m. Parking is not free at DFW. Take some extra cash and maybe some food and drink in case the plane is late.

The city of Parker (Nastia's hometown) is planning a homecoming parade in her honor on Saturday. The details aren't official yet.

Dallas ISD has introduced new rules for teachers to grade by -- rules that require teachers to give extra opportunities to submit late work unrelated to an absence, that allow students to retake all flunked tests with the higher grade being recorded, and that limit the lowest grade given to a 50 (even if no work is turned in).

The Perseids

August 11 and 12 (Monday and Tuesday evenings), be prepared for one of best-known showers of the year. The Perseids rarely disappoint with about sixty meteors per hour. Get some lawn chairs or a blanket to lie on in the back yard, cover up or use plenty of bug spray, and turn off the porch lights. A cooler of beer or juice boxes, depending on the ages of your viewing companions, and maybe some snacks should make it more enjoyable.

Now this sounds like fun -- Dragonfly, the restaurant at Hotel Zaza, is having a "Jazz in Your Jammies" brunch. As the name implies, it's pajama-chic. Arrive clad in your nightgown and slippers (no bare feet, of course) and enjoy a New Orleans-inspired menu and live jazz.

Star Party

Look at nebulae, star clusters, planets, moons, and interesting happenings in the night sky this Saturday, August 9 with the members of the Fort Worth Astronomical Society. Society members bring their telescopes to the parking lot north of the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History in the Fort Worth Cultural District and allow the public to view the night sky. Admission is free. The star party starts after dusk when the sky is dark enough to see the stars.

Due to the unusually high number of cryptosporidiosis cases this summer, health officials are advising caution before you go to Dallas area water parks and public pools. People with weakened immune systems, such as those who have undergone chemotherapy or has autoimmune diseases, pregnant women, and very young children should avoid public swimming areas.
