The state of Texas has held a tax holiday annually for several years. During the three-day weekend (August 15-17 in 2008), retailers do not collect sales tax on most clothing and shoes as well as backpacks for elementary and secondary school students.

Children attending school in Texas are required to have been vaccinated for nine communicable diseases before entering grades kindergarten through twelfth. Children attending day care in Texas must also be vaccinated for three more communicable diseases.

A quarter of a million school-age children live in the city limits of Dallas. Most of those children -- a little over 160,000 -- attend schools within the Dallas Independent School District. The other 100,000 children attend schools in the many smaller districts that border Dallas ISD.
The Fort Worth Independent School District is the fifth largest school district in Texas with nearly 80,000 students. Fort Worth ISD serves the cities of Fort Worth, Benbrook, Westover Hills, Westworth Village, Haltom City, Forest Hills, and some unincorporated portions of Tarrant County with eighty elementary schools, twenty-four middle schools, thirteen high schools, and twenty-seven alternative schools.
Arlington Independent School District is the ninth largest school district in Texas with more than 62,000 students. AISD serves the city of Arlington and portions of Grand Prairie, Pantego, and Dalworthington Gardens with fifty elementary schools, twelve junior highs, six high schools, and five alternative schools.
Grand Prairie Independent School District is located between Dallas and Fort Worth and has more than 23,000 students. Grand Prairie ISD serves the Dallas County portion of Grand Prairie with twenty-four elementary schools, seven middle schools, two centers specializing in ninth grade, two high schools, and two alternative education centers.
The Irving Independent School District is located in the center of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex and has more than 33,000 students. Irving ISD serves most of the city of Irving and part of the city of Grand Prairie with four high schools, seven middle schools, twenty elementary schools, three early childhood schools, and five learning centers.
